INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – February 27, 2025 – Employees from GMS’ Indianapolis office dedicated their time and efforts to support Gleaners, a nonprofit organization focused on optimizing equitable access to nutritious food for those facing hunger and striving to overcome the conditions causing food insecurity.
During the event, the GMS team joined other volunteers at Gleaners' food pantry drive-thru distribution. Volunteers loaded cars with food and directed traffic, ensuring a smooth and efficient process. Each day the pantry is open, the project serves more than 1,800 households. During their shift, the GMS group helped provide up to 25,000 meals.
About Gleaners
Founded in 1980 by a group of citizens committed to the belief that no one should go hungry, Gleaners has grown to be the largest hunger relief organization in Indiana. As one of 200-member food banks in the Feeding America Network, Gleaners provides nutritious food to roughly one-third of the food insecure population in Indiana. They achieve this through their initiatives and by serving as a wholesale distributor through a committed network of more than 300 partners in their 21-county service area.
On May 1, 2017, Gleaners established Fresh Connect Central, one of just six Feeding America regional cooperatives. Together, they work to dramatically reduce food waste by sourcing vast quantities of fresh foods that would otherwise have been discarded or plowed under. In 2024, Gleaners distributed 97,048,993 meals to their 21-county service area and food banks in 21 states with Fresh Connect Central. Additionally, 69% of the food distributed ranked green or yellow based on Healthy Eating Research guidelines.
