  • I’ve never worked in an office before. For so many summers, all I did was work the typical jobs you’d expect from a kid in high school. Swim clubs, gas stations; my summers were reminiscent of Dante’s life from the 1994 movie Clerks, complete with me saying more than just once or twice, “I’m not even supposed to be here today!”

I grew up in a small town in central Pennsylvania, but was born in Cleveland. Upon graduation, I took a note from LeBron and decided to come home. I’m currently going into my senior year at Cleveland State, and this summer I decided to change things. I figured it was time to leave the lifeguard stands and gas pumps behind in Smallville and get myself an office internship. That’s how I found GMS.

Image of a gas pump. Learn how one intern went from jobs at gas stations to a summer PEO internship.

    The PEO Internship Experience

I’d never even heard of a Professional Employer Organization until I found GMS. I had heard of the company before and seen their sales reps and their cars driving around, but never understood what they were or what they did. After doing some research into PEOs, I saw what the industry was about. PEOs are the ultimate asset to any business owner looking to focus on what they excel in instead of dealing with all the administrative paperwork and the headaches that go along with them. Even with that description, I didn’t fully understand just what set GMS apart until my very first day as an intern.

Everyone here, not just at headquarters but at all locations, is dedicated to the client. It’s something every place says they do, but at GMS they mean it. Sales reps maintain relationships with clients. Risk management experts handle any workers’ compensation and safety issues. Benefits professionals ensure that employees are taken care of and that their company saves money doing it. Payroll specialists make sure employees are paid and that everything is running smoothly. The entire GMS team is working for their clients and going above and beyond what you’d find anywhere else.

    A Fulfilling Internship Environment

Working at GMS has really been a treat. The coworkers and the environment couldn’t be better, with everyone knowing each other and creating such a fun workplace that it feels like I’m not just another intern, but a fellow coworker. The work has been fulfilling with everyday holding something new, whether it be calls, projects, sales rep meetings, or something entirely unexpected.

There’s a lot going on at GMS, but everyone manages to handle it and succeed. I no longer feel like Dante from Clerks; I’m supposed to be here. Check out GMS openings to join in on the experience.

  • Group Management Services is a Professional Employer Organization founded by Mike Kahoe in 1996. This summer I was fortunate enough to be one of three interns at the GMS National Headquarters in Richfield, Ohio.

I absolutely love my job, and if you were to step into our office you’d find 90-plus people that would say the exact same thing! Here are the top five reasons I’m having the best summer ever, and why you would too, at GMS:

Image of a happy office. Find out five reasons why GMS is a great place for a sales and marketing internship.

    5) The Perks

This is not your average internship. Just as our sales representatives receive a base salary and commissions, GMS interns earn an hourly wage plus a weekly bonus based off of performance. Not to mention all the other perks that they offer.

    4) The Chickens

I bet you weren’t expecting to see this on the list! GMS Headquarters has their very own chicken coop stationed right next to a gigantic organic garden in our own backyard! Fresh eggs, fresh fruits, and veggies go hand-in-hand with a company-wide wellness initiative. GMS encourages a healthy and happy lifestyle in more ways than one, which includes our own fitness center, outdoor yoga classes, health screenings, and healthy lunch challenges, all while we compete in the Cleveland Corporate Challenge!

    3) The Energy

A stimulating, healthy environment doesn’t only create overall wellness and reduce health risks, it also maintains a productive, active workforce. GMS is filled with young professionals with a positive, competitive spirit. It’s a contagious attitude that keeps you motivated throughout the day.

    2) The Experience

The experience you gain from working in a location, industry, or specific position you’re interested in is the entire purpose of an internship. GMS can offer attractive testaments to all of the above! Our Richfield Headquarters is only 30 minutes from Downtown Cleveland. There are also other GMS locations in Ohio, Virginia, Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Nevada.

No matter which location you’re at, the experience of an industry that works with a variety of different businesses makes for a new and exciting challenge every day. Being a sales and marketing intern has allowed me to gain experience directly related to what I hope to pursue after graduation. I’ve also learned more about internal departments like Risk Management and Benefits to understand just how our company is able to offer the services we do.

    1) The People

The No. 1 reason you should intern at GMS is because of the people that make up this company. From day one it was clear that everyone is not only willing, but excited, to help in any way they can. GMS has built their culture on a foundation of personable individuals that encourage the success of their peers. I have never felt unwelcome, unappreciated, or undervalued both inside and outside of the workplace since joining the team!

  • A little extra protection can go a long way toward making your employees happy. Traditional group health plans are a great start for many of your employees, but some members of your team or potential recruits may need additional coverage.

Supplemental insurance plans allow business owners to attract and retain talented employees through additional coverage. A Professional Employer Organization can provide you with extra insurance options to benefit both you and your employees.

GMS can help keep and attract talented employees with supplemental insurance plans for businesses.

How Supplemental Insurance Plans Benefits Your Employees

One big benefit of supplemental insurance plans is that it can help ease the fears of your employees by covering additional expenses. Supplemental plans can help cover:

    • Deductibles
    • Copayments
    • Coinsurance
    • Medication costs
    • Out-of-network fees
    • Lost wages due to injury or illness

These benefits will please employees who might be worried about costly charges. Partnering with a PEO like GMS can also give your employees a chance to pick and choose the additional insurance coverage they require; that way they don’t get charged for supplemental benefits they don’t need.

How Supplemental Insurance Plans Benefit Business Owners

If an employee is worried that his or her health insurance isn’t enough to cover what he or she needs, they may start looking for better coverage elsewhere. Even if they don’t leave, the worry over their coverage can impact the quality of their work and their morale.

Offering an employee peace of mind through supplemental insurance plan can ease their fears and give them more incentive to stay put. These plans can also make your company look much more attractive to potential recruits who will have to decide which business best fits their needs.

    Supplement Your Traditional Insurance Plan

If your employees are clamoring for supplemental insurance, it might be time to reach out to GMS about what we can do to help you attract and retain good employees. Contact us today to learn more about how we can help you offer supplemental insurance.

  • When you’re a business owner, a 401(k) or profit sharing plan is a must to help attract and retain great employees.

While you may be the owner of a company, you’re likely not an expert on the legal responsibilities of offering these plans to your employees. Most business owners are too focused on running their company to provide an adequate amount of attention on benefits administration.

Your benefits don’t have to be a hassle. A Professional Employer Organization (PEO) can step in and cut costs, save time, and offer customizable plans for your company.

GMS can help business owners offer appealing 401(k) and profit sharing plans.

Saving Time on 401(k) and Profit Sharing Plans

You may not be an expert on 401(k) and profit sharing plans, but the people who work for a PEO are. By working with a PEO, you won’t waste your valuable time trying to make sense of something that you likely don’t have much experience. Plus, management fees are low, so you won’t have to break the bank to get a professionally managed plan.

A PEO can work to set you up with a customizable plan that fits what you and your employees want. That means that you can spend your time on ways to build your company instead of getting headaches trying to wrap your head around the legal responsibilities of benefits administration.

  • Rising health care costs make it difficult for small and midsize businesses to offer competitive benefits, but partnering with a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) can help. This article explains how GMS uses collective buying power to secure better group health coverage at lower premiums while providing diverse insurance options and expert compliance support. By working with a PEO, businesses can reduce costs, streamline benefits administration, and give employees access to high-quality health plans.

As a business owner, offering excellent health care benefits is key to attracting and retaining top talent. However, the rising costs of health care premiums can make it challenging to find a group health plan that balances quality with affordability. In 2024, this challenge is more significant than ever as health care costs continue to rise.

This is where partnering with a professional employer organization (PEO) like Group Management Services (GMS) can make a substantial difference. By leveraging the collective power of a PEO, your business can access premier group health insurance coverage without breaking the bank. Let’s explore how GMS can help you secure better group health coverage for your employees.

Enhanced Buying Power And Cost Efficiency

A PEO provides your business with the buying power typically reserved for large corporations. GMS represents more than 50,000 employees, enabling us to help small businesses purchase group health insurance at an average of 24% lower employee premiums and 15% lower family premiums compared to the U.S. average.

GMS combines the collective strength of all its clients, allowing small to midsize businesses to gain access to the same competitive premiums as large companies. This means your business can benefit from lower health insurance premiums while still offering comprehensive coverage to your employees. With health care costs rising, this buying power is more valuable than ever, allowing you to provide top-tier benefits without sacrificing your bottom line.

    Diverse Group Health Coverage Options

One of the biggest advantages of partnering with GMS is the ability to offer your employees a wide range of group health coverage options. Contrary to what some might believe, lower premiums through a PEO do not mean compromising on the quality of the health plans available to your employees. GMS partners with many major insurance carriers to provide various options tailored to meet the diverse needs of your workforce. These options include:

    • Medical insurance
    • Dental insurance
    • Vision insurance
    • Group life insurance
    • Short-term and long-term disability
    • Flexible spending account (FSA)
    • Health savings account (HSA)
    • Employee assistance program (EAP)
    • 401(k) plan
    • Telemedicine
    • Accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D)

These options allow you to customize a benefits package that meets your employees’ needs, helping you stand out as an employer of choice in a competitive job market.

    Streamlined Administration And Compliance

Managing group health insurance can be complex and time-consuming, especially with the ever-changing landscape of health care regulations. GMS not only helps you access better group health coverage but also takes on the administrative burden. This includes managing enrollments, handling claims, staying on top of Affordable Care Act (ACA) regulations, and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.

You gain access to a team of experts who can train your employees on how your plan works and answer difficult health plan questions. With GMS, you can focus on growing your business while we manage the intricacies of your employee benefits program.

Lower Your Group Health Care Premiums With GMS

In today’s economic environment, maximizing every dollar spent on employee benefits is crucial. By partnering with GMS, you can offer high-quality health care benefits at the reduced premiums typically enjoyed by larger businesses. This partnership not only improves the health and satisfaction of your employees but also enhances your company’s financial health.

By leveraging our collective buying power, diverse coverage options, and comprehensive administrative support, you can significantly lower your group health care premiums while providing your employees with top-tier benefits. Contact GMS today to speak with one of our health care experts and learn more about how partnering with a PEO can benefit your business.

  • Whether you’re an employer who runs a pretty safe workplace or you’re one with more than its fair share of worker’s comp claims, the Department of Labor has some new rules for you to “nudge” you in the proper direction.

Under a new rule from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), there is an effort to modernize its data collection and create a new database for investors and workers alike to learn about how safe a company is. Not a bad idea, but one that leans heavily on small business’ HR departments.

Image of a hard hat. Learn how OSHA’s new fasety datatbase rule can affect businesses.

How OSHA’s New Rule Will Impact HR Departments

Small businesses with more than 10 employees already are required to track injuries at work for OSHA purposes, but it has now gotten a little more transparent. According to Insurance Business America, the data gathered from this will be posted on OSHA’s website for the world to see.

The purpose for this is to shine the public eye on businesses without a particularly clean record. “‘Since high injury rates are a sign of poor management, no employer wants to be seen publicly as operating a dangerous workplace,’ said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels. ‘Our new reporting requirements will ‘nudge’ employers to prevent worker injuries and illnesses to demonstrate to investors, job seekers, customers, and the public that they operate safe and well-managed facilities. Access to injury data will also help OSHA better target our compliance assistance and enforcement resources at establishments where workers are at greatest risk, and enable ‘big data’ researchers to apply their skills to making workplaces safer.’”

In larger companies, these things are typically handled by the HR department in conjunction with the company’s safety manager or risk department. Small employers, of course, rely on the business owner to navigate the insurance world with the help of their brokers or third party administrators, giving them access to a lot of info about their company. At best, that’s all you need. At worst, there may be an additional cost to bring in outside consultants to do safety inspections and audits.

Working with a Professional Employer Organization

If this new rule is something that concerns you, you have options. One of which is to of course reach out to a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) like GMS about making your company’s HR simpler, safer, and stronger.  Contact us today to learn more about how we can help your business.

  • An unexpected departure from an employee can leave owners in a tight bind. Recruiting and hiring a new employee is a big undertaking for any company. Just like employee separation, the replacement process can cost your company a lot of time and money.

Image of a job interview. Learn about the costs of employee replacement.

    The Costs of Employee Replacement

Employees leave companies for any number of reasons. No matter the situation, their replacement won’t be cheap. In fact, it can cost up to 50 percent of an entry-level employee’s annual salary to find a replacement. That percentage goes even higher for employees with more experience.

Replacing one employee can be costly enough. Hitting a period where you have multiple employees leave around the same time can really hurt the company coffers. Just a few departing employees can potentially mean hundreds of thousands of dollars in replacement costs.

    Why Replacement Takes Time

Even if you’re looking to replace someone quickly, it’s important to try and find the right person for the job. That means spending time to go through the hiring process. Necessary but time-consuming replacement costs during this time include:

    • Recruiting applicants
    • Entrance interviews
    • Employment Testing
    • Pre-employment administrative expenses
    • Medical exams, drug testing, background checks
    • Training costs

Making a rushed hiring decision can end up hurting you in the long run. Think of the time you spend during the replacement process as an investment in your future. Sure, a person might be able to fill a role right away, but unless you take the time to make sure that they have the right skills and are a good cultural fit for your office, you might end up having to replace them sooner than you’d like.

    Employee Management

Recruiting and replacement takes time, and sometimes you just don’t have much time to give. Teaming up with a Professional Employer Organization like Group Management Services can allow your company to spend the time necessary to recruit, train, and retain new employees.

At GMS, we’re in the business of making your business simpler, safer, and stronger. Contact us today to see how we can help with your recruiting needs.

  • Healthcare is an important part of any small business. That’s why it’s important that you ask your medical insurance company about their services. It can be easy to turn a blind eye to what your insurance company is doing, but you should get a better understanding of how they’re serving you so that you can evaluate what they’re doing to help you. Here are four healthcare topics you should ask about.

Image of a doctor. Healthcare administration can give small business owners the service they need.

    Plan Coverage

It’s important to know exactly what your plan covers. This may seem a bit obvious, but you never want to be surprised when you get a bill. While you need to know the limits of your coverage, it’s also good to find out if you’re paying for unnecessary benefits. Not all benefits will fit you and your employees, so asking for more information can help uncover these areas and potentially save you money.

    Healthcare Cost Negotiation

Don’t be afraid to ask your healthcare provider how they negotiate costs. Different negotiation strategies can lead to realistic healthcare pricing, so it’s good to inquire about what your provider is doing to make healthcare costs more manageable.

    Medical Bills Audits

No one wants to get incorrectly charged on a bill. Ask your health insurance company about how they audit medical bills to make sure that you get the coverage you pay for. Double billing and other mistakes can happen, so it’s important to know that your bills are checked every time. If your insurance company is less than transparent about this, you might not be getting the attention you deserve.

    Customer Service

You and your employees should never have trouble getting answers about your health insurance. Asking about a provider’s customer service can help you get an understanding about how well they will be able to assist your company when there are any questions or issues. If they’re not very forthcoming with information about the type of customer service they provide, they might not be that great at helping you when you have an actual insurance concern.

    Healthcare Administration Services

You and your employees deserve to be more than just a number to medical insurance companies. Your business deserves high-quality service, which is why we offer employee benefit administration to help you get the care you need. Contact GMS today to talk to one of our experts about how a Professional Employer Organization like GMS can help you regain control of your healthcare coverage.

  • Creating a startup venture is no easy task. Startups come in all shapes, sizes, and industries. Neil Blumenthal, cofounder and co-CEO of Warby Parker summarizes it best, saying, “A startup is a company working to solve a problem where the solution is not obvious and success is not guaranteed.”

According to Small Business Trends, almost half of small businesses don’t make it past the fourth year. These companies still aren’t in the clear, as Forbes estimates that the overall failure rate for startups falls between 80 and 90 percent.

Image of a startup company in need of help from a Professional Employer Organization.

    Why Startups Fail

There is a myriad of reasons as to why these companies fail. Whether it’s due to putting out a product too early, not having enough capital, or simply being unable to keep up with the status quo, the statistics show that the odds are against these entrepreneurs. One of the often overlooked aspects of running a startup business is the human resources function, which can present many challenges, such as hiring and retention, employee training, safety, payroll, and benefits.

    How Startups Can Succeed

There are many factors that contribute to the success of a startup. In his TED Talk, Bill Gross, founder of startup studio Idea Lab, attributes it largely to timing. Whether the world isn’t ready for it, the timing is just right, or you’re too late to the game, Gross says, “Timing accounted for 42 percent of the difference between success and failure.” Additionally, solid finances and great execution (which could be anything from product marketing to internal processes) can contribute to a businesses’ success and longevity.

A Professional Employer Organization (PEO) can help startups develop critical hiring and retention practices, offload the burden of administrative tasks like payroll, and offer benefits in a cost-effective manner. The National Association of Professional Employer Organizations (NAPEO) found that businesses working with a PEO:

    • Grow 7 to 9 percent faster.
    • Are 50 percent less likely to go out of business.

PEOs provide a number of services to help manage payroll, taxes, human resources, employee benefits, and more. Here’s how startups can benefit by working with a PEO:

    Recruitment

As your startup grows, it can be hard to find the right people. According to CareerBuilder, the average cost of a bad hire can be as high as $15,000. Bad hires are typically made from rushing the interview process, lacking adequate talent acquisition tools, and failing to conduct background checks.

A PEO can offer guidance and resources for hiring, from creating and posting job ads to reviewing resumes. PEOs can do all the legwork to streamline the recruiting process and attract quality candidates.

    Retention

Working for a startup can often mean long hours, which can lead to increased burnout and turnover. Especially when benefits packages are lacking or paychecks aren’t delivered on time, good employees may look elsewhere for better work/life balance, benefits, or job security. The aforementioned CareerBuilder survey found that the average cost of losing a quality employee is nearly $30,000.

Providing attractive benefits, building rewards programs, and implementing employee feedback tools are just a couple ways PEOs can help startups retain top talent. In fact, NAPEO found that those that do work with a PEO, experience a 10 to 14 percent lower employee turnover.

    Standards

It’s often challenging for business owners to develop HR policies from scratch. In the early stages, many startups will even employ a “too small to matter” mindset, believing they can handle issues as they arise. The problem, though, is that when problems do—and they will—arise, employees and managers have no place to turn when they need a standard for business conduct.

A PEO can help startups create employee handbooks and set employee expectations. Having good policies in place can help establish a positive company culture where employees understand expectations and feel comfortable addressing any problems they may be facing. In fact, a study by the University of Warwick found that happy employees are 12 percent more productive.

    Payroll

For startups, managing payroll and filing taxes can be a time-consuming and challenging task. Between income types, deductions, contributions, and of course taxes, payroll can be tricky to comprehend.

That’s where working with a PEO can provide value to both startup founders and their employees. PEOs can provide access to payroll software to streamline the payroll process, ensure payroll is delivered on time, simplify time tracking, and eliminate payroll mistakes. Payroll tax management also helps reduce tax liabilities and responsibilities.

    Compliance

From misclassifying employees as contractors to offering workers shares in lieu of pay, it’s not uncommon for startups to violate federal regulations, even without intent. According to the IRS, 40 percent of small businesses incur an average of $845 in penalties each year.

To minimize liability and keep up with extensive governmental regulations, a PEO can help startups stay compliant. PEOs offer assistance with payroll taxes by managing records, filing state and federal taxes, and issuing forms like 940, 941, W-2, and W-3s.

    Benefits

Good employee benefits are essential to attracting and retaining top talent, yet the cost of providing benefits can be extremely costly to startup businesses. A survey by the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) found that 92 percent of employees find benefits important to their overall job satisfaction, with nearly a third citing employee benefits as a reason to stay or leave their current positions.

A PEO can offer startups more cost-effective benefits packages by leveraging the power of group health coverage. Not to mention, PEOs can offer more comprehensive coverage, including supplemental insurance, retirement savings plans, wellness programs, and more.

  • Self-improvement is a constant thought in most consumer’s minds and the advertising industry knows this all too well. “The weight loss industry is a 60-billion-dollar business” oversaturated with fitness gurus and companies advocating various fad diets and weight-loss products. However, these media-marketed solutions don’t stick and people end up feeling confused and frustrated.

Aside from the quick-fix mentality from the media, people are also growing tired of the “just eat less and move more” advice they may receive from their physicians and peers. However, professional wellness coaches, who are trained in behavior modification techniques, can help individuals bridge the gap between medical recommendations and the behaviors required to implement them.

Wellness educators use behavior modification techniques to help individuals identify personal barriers and set realistic goals

Often a visit to a medical professional will encompass a diagnosis and basic advice that leaves many feeling lost in how to take action. This type of care does not help individuals, with their own unique needs or personal barriers, make the necessary adjustments. It also does not allow for the person to create their own solution to the existing problem.

Working directly with a personal wellness coach creates long-term successes in establishing healthier lifestyles

Researchers at the University of California at Los Angeles analyzed 31 long-term diet studies and found that about two-thirds of dieters regained more weight within four or five years than they initially lost.”

However, health professionals know that the solution isn’t about following a specific diet or the use of a particular weight-loss product, but instead it’s the level of self-confidence and ability to consistently make small changes that lead to long-term better health.

Aside from developing new positive habits, “The New England Journal of Medicine found that participants who were coached via telephone spent less money on medical care and drugs and were 10 percent less likely to be admitted to the hospital than those who were not coached.”

A wellness coach provides the additional support when working directly with clients to:

    • Educate individuals on researched-based theories
    • Recognize and understand how and when it’s appropriate to adjust a client’s health plan based on current progress of the client
    • Create a motivating and fun atmosphere where a client can develop confidence and self-efficacy
